Reflections from a Black woman engaged in the modern struggle for information access for all.
I spent this 100th Black History Month reflecting on Black women’s many contributions to information access and technology. Black women rarely receive recognition for any of our acheivements, much less credit and compensation for our innovations in tech. Yet Black acheivements in tech built our modern digital world.
I invite you to join me in interrupting the cycle of Black innovation, exploitation, and extraction by learning about the Black women who brought us steps closer to information access for all.
6 Black Women who contribute to Information Access
Barriers to Black Information Access in 2026
As Black Women face the highest job loss rate among any other demographic, platforms extract data from Black people to train “Black” AI generated influencers. As our Federal government dumps Billions into “tech innovation”, Black communities still struggle to afford reliable home internet. Tech companies partner with police to use GPS, tech developed by a Black woman mind you, to track and incarcerate Black community members. While the country seeks more computing power for AI, Black communities experience the harm and pollution from data centers.
How you can support the future of Black Tech and Information Access
You may have noticed that I included myself as a Black History figure. As uncomfortable as that makes me, I am making a point to inturrupt the cycle of Black innovation and exploitation by acknowledging my own contributions to information access. Until Black women get the credit and recognition we deserve, you must become comfortable with us celebrating ourselves : )
You are supporting the future of Black Tech and information right now, by reading original content from a Black owned web creator. You can support me further by sharing my work, donating, and contracting trainings from me. As one of the hundreds of thousands of Black women impacted by layoffs, every endorsement and donation goes a long way.
Wishing you a very happy 100th Black History Month.
